Needless to say, it’s easy to get “there from here” via Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. It offers dozens of convenient nonstop destinations and countless connections. And the good news goes on in that the airport continues its upward trend with new service, new accolades and a new grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Allegiant has added non-stop service to Nashville.

In March 2018, Allegiant Air announced Savannah/Hilton Head International as one of the first airports for their new Nashville service. June 8 was the start date for the seasonal service with two weekly nonstop departures. So, you have the option for a direct flight to “Music City” where you can stroll down Honky Tonk Highway, be awed by the grandeur of the Grand Ole Opry and more.

American Airlines added two new routes starting June 2018.

Now it’s even easier to get to Chicago and Miami. Starting June 7, American Airlines added year-round daily nonstop service to Miami International and seasonal daily nonstop service to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The Miami flight is Savannah/Hilton Head International’s only direct flight to south Florida, and the service to Chicago runs June to September.

Frontier began two new routes in the spring of 2018.

Beginning in May, Frontier added the longest nonstop route from Savannah with flights to Denver twice a week (on Mondays and Fridays). And the carrier began offering seasonal nonstop flights to Philadelphia on Mondays and Fridays. With the introduction of this low-cost carrier’s new service, affordability gets an additional boost for travelers in our neck of the woods.

A $7 million grant is in hand to make infrastructure improvements.

Thirty-seven airports across the country were recently awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation for airport infrastructure, and our very own gem of an airport is one of them. Kudos are in order for this award. Now, as for how the money will be put to use, according to Greg Kelley, executive director of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, the grant will be used to build an apron expansion at the terminal building and for gate expansion and security checkpoint expansion.

Our hometown airport made the Condé Nast list of winning favorites again.

In 2017, for the second year in a row, Savannah/Hilton Head International made the list of the 10 best airports in the U.S. as rated by Condé Nast readers. More than 300,000 travelers took part in their annual survey, rating our hometown airport such that it came in at #6 on the list. Mentioned were the inviting layout, the shops and restaurants that range from fast food to pub-style food.

Savannah/Hilton Head Airport earned another accolade from Travel + Leisure.

Every year Travel + Leisure asks its readers to weigh in on their top travel experiences; this includes domestic airports. And for the second consecutive year, Savannah/Hilton Head International made their top 10 list of the best U.S. airports. It placed at #7. That means it impressed travelers when it comes to restaurants/bars, shopping, access and curb-to-plane experience.

All of this is exciting news. Plus, it reminds us that Savannah/Hilton Head International is a first-class airport that just keeps on getting better. And that’s a win-win for the airport and for all who pass through its gates whether it’s locals on our way elsewhere or out-of-towners dropping in for a visit.
